Corpus Christi Unveils Improved Affordable Housing Complex

Woodland Creek Apartments in Northwest Corpus Christi reopens to the public

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (Nov 13, 2015) – Woodland Creek Apartments, completely rebuilt and now equipped with modern amenities and several other improvements, held its grand opening celebration this morning. First built in 1981, Woodland Creek Apartments has provided low-income residents in Calallen and surrounding communities with affordable-housing options. Last year, San Antonio-based Prospera Housing Community Services and Corpus Christi’s TG 110, Inc. demolished the original property and began reconstruction of Woodland Creek, a $17.5 million affordable housing project financed by Capital One.

The upgraded 94-unit multifamily housing complex, constructed by the NRP Group, has been rebuilt to current building codes with upgraded modern amenities. The property consists of 7 buildings total, 5 of them residential, one office/business center and one maintenance building. Other new features include a swimming pool, two playgrounds, covered pavilion, security fencing, washer/dryer connections, all major kitchen energy star appliances and energy efficient central heating and air.

In the midst of Corpus Christi’s affordable housing crisis, the reconstruction of Woodland Creek apartments provides relief to families operating on below-average incomes. Gil Piette, the Executive Director of Prospera Housing Community Services reinforced the need for the project stating, “A place to call home should be something that is attainable to everybody. Woodland Creek Apartments provide affordable housing options that look and feel like Class A Market properties.”

Woodland Creek property manager, Dora Martinez, expressed the positive feedback on the project stating, “We reached maximum occupancy on our new and improved apartments by late October and have been anxiously awaiting the reveal of the new Woodland Creek property to the public.” Martinez also added that though it has been a long journey, the Woodland Creek team is “excited about everything finally coming together.”

Carolyn Vaughn, City Councilwoman from District 1, echoed the excitement over the project stating, “The renovation of Woodland Creek Apartments is a step in the right direction and a wonderful addition to Northwest Corpus Christi.”

Units were set aside for event attendees to tour. New residents, the project team and city officials participated in the grand opening festivities which included a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
