Willie Drummer – Molina Healthcare Success Story

Willie Drummer’s journey reflects how housing stability, ongoing case management, and community support can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the long-term risks associated with homelessness and housing insecurity.

Originally from San Antonio, Willie experienced increasing hardship after the home he shared with his brother went into foreclosure. Without running water or electricity for an extended period of time, Willie eventually transitioned into temporary housing at Victory Gospel Chapel, where he remained for nearly a year. As his birthday approached in October 2025, Willie faced the possibility of becoming homeless once again after being informed his transitional stay was ending.

As a Molina Healthcare member, Willie was referred to Prospera’s Housing Navigation program for assistance. After completing an intake, Prospera’s Housing Navigator worked quickly to identify affordable housing options that aligned with Willie’s limited Social Security income and immediate housing needs. Through coordination with Prospera properties, an income-based unit was identified at Village at the Loop.

The Housing Navigator provided hands-on support throughout the process, including assistance obtaining required documentation, coordinating with property management, helping Willie access online records, printing required documents, and ensuring application materials were submitted on time. Willie was approved and signed his lease on October 20, 2025, successfully avoiding homelessness.

Although securing housing was a major milestone, long-term stabilization remained critical. Willie moved into his apartment with very few personal belongings or household necessities. Through ongoing follow-up visits, Prospera identified additional needs and coordinated support through community partnerships and donations.

Over the following months, Willie received emergency food assistance through the on-site Angel Pantry, along with dishes, cookware, towels, bedding, silverware, hygiene items, and other household essentials. During one visit, Willie shared that he had been sleeping on an air mattress, which later developed a hole, forcing him to sleep on his loveseat. In response, Prospera coordinated additional community donations, including a twin bed, dresser, apartment decorations, and a $25 HEB gift card to assist with food and household needs.

During a recent follow-up visit, Willie shared that having stable housing has significantly improved both his stress level and overall well-being. He explained that before obtaining housing, much of his focus was on simply surviving and worrying about where he would live. Now, with a stable home environment, he is better able to focus on attending medical appointments and managing his healthcare needs.

Property management has reported that Willie consistently pays his rent on time, maintains his apartment, and has become a positive member of the community. Willie also remains connected to Victory Gospel Chapel, where he continues to attend church and volunteer.

Reflecting on his journey, Willie shared how grateful he is for the support he received and how much he loves his new home. For Willie, Village at the Loop is more than just an apartment—it is stability, dignity, improved health, and a fresh start after a period of uncertainty.
